Android Pay won't work with Bootloader Unlocked phones

Android Pay is a new feature coming to Android Wear 2.0, that is if you have the hardware in your watch to make it work. But if your watch has Android Wear 2.0 and NFC, you’ll be able to make mobile payments with your watch completely independently of your phone.

Many were hoping to use this as a way to use Android Pay, since it won’t work on phones that have unlocked bootloaders for security reasons. Unfortunately, that won’t be the case. Google has confirmed that even if the watch is unmodified, it won’t be able to use Android Pay if it’s paired to a phone that has an unlocked bootloader.

We really can’t blame Google, because this is payment data we’re talking about. The data still goes through the phone over Bluetooth, so the unlocked bootloader is a potential security risk. Nonetheless, it’s a disappointment for those of us with bootlaoder unlocked phones unable to use Android Pay.
