Google is taking the Gemini experience to the next level by introducing "Notebooks," a brand-new feature designed to seamlessly organize your chats, files, and projects. Following the initial integration of source support last year, this update brings a much deeper connection between the Gemini app and NotebookLM, allowing for a highly efficient, project-based workflow.
What Are Gemini Notebooks?
Think of Notebooks as your personal knowledge bases. Designed to be shared across the Google ecosystem, they are starting their journey within the Gemini app. Essentially, they act as dedicated workspaces for your projects. You can easily find the new "Notebooks" section located directly in the Gemini side panel, conveniently placed between "My stuff" and "Gems."
How Do Notebooks Work?
Every chat in Gemini now features an “Add to notebook” option within the overflow menu. Once you select a notebook, you can ask Gemini questions and utilize all existing prompt box tools. What makes this feature truly powerful is its source management. Above your prompt, you can view your handpicked sources—which can include Files, Google Drive documents, Websites, or Copied text—and effortlessly add or delete them as needed.
By organizing these sources into a notebook, Gemini can leverage them alongside its powerful AI tools and web search capabilities to deliver incredibly tailored and uniquely helpful responses.
Deep Integration with NotebookLM
The synergy between Gemini and NotebookLM is a game-changer. Within a Gemini notebook, you will find a shortcut in the top-right corner that launches NotebookLM directly. Furthermore, any conversations you have within a Gemini notebook will automatically appear as a source over in NotebookLM. Notebooks you create in the Gemini app will also be readily available in NotebookLM.
You also have full control over how Gemini interacts with your data. An overflow menu lets you toggle “Use notebook memory” on or off, and you can add specific Instructions to guide Gemini on how to respond and what tone to use.
Real-World Application: Perfect for Students and Professionals
Google highlights how transformative this can be for students. Imagine adding your class notes into a notebook and using NotebookLM to generate a Cinematic Video Overview to help you study. The next day, you can open the exact same notebook in the Gemini app and ask the AI to draft an essay outline based on those specific materials.
Rollout Details
Currently, Notebooks are rolling out on the web exclusively for Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers. However, Google has confirmed that the feature will expand to mobile devices, additional countries across Europe, and eventually to free users in the coming weeks. Google has stated this is just the first step, with even more helpful features planned for notebooks in the future.
